Ancient Wisdom, Modern Science: Dr. Rosa Vásquez Espinoza on Saving the Amazon Rainforest

"The future is ancestral, too."

That was the message Dr. Rosa Vásquez Espinoza left with journalists during an American Community Media briefing exploring the intersection of Indigenous knowledge, modern science, and the future of the Amazon rainforest. Drawing on her work as a Peruvian chemical biologist, National Geographic Explorer, and founder of Amazon Research Internacional, Vásquez Espinoza argued that some of humanity's most pressing environmental and scientific challenges may be addressed by knowledge Indigenous communities have preserved for generations.

The discussion centered on the Amazon's role as one of Earth's most important ecosystems. Home to roughly 10 percent of the world's known biodiversity, the rainforest helps regulate global weather systems, stores vast amounts of carbon, and provides resources that support millions of people. Yet accelerating deforestation, mining, and climate change continue to threaten its ecological stability. Vásquez Espinoza suggested that conservation efforts have often overlooked the expertise of the people who have lived in the forest the longest.

She described an Indigenous worldview rooted in reciprocity, where human health and environmental health are inseparable. "If they are not healthy, me as a human being, I am not healthy," she said, explaining that many Indigenous cultures understand forests, rivers, plants, and animals as interconnected parts of a living system rather than resources existing solely for human use. That perspective has shaped generations of land stewardship and continues to influence her scientific work.

Those beliefs have informed the growing Rights of Nature movement, which seeks legal standing for ecosystems. Vásquez Espinoza explained that while individuals and corporations can both be represented in court, nature generally cannot. Existing environmental laws often respond after damage has occurred, she said, while ecosystems increasingly require preventative approaches centered on regeneration rather than restoration alone. The movement, she noted, draws heavily from Indigenous philosophies that recognize rivers, forests, and other ecosystems as possessing inherent rights.

One of the clearest examples of traditional knowledge informing modern science emerged through her research on stingless bees. Native throughout tropical regions, the insects have existed since the age of the dinosaurs and pollinate crops including coffee, cacao, blueberries, and avocados. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Indigenous communities across Peru independently reported using stingless bee honey to treat symptoms of infection, prompting the first chemical analysis of the honey by her research team.

The bees quickly became more than a scientific subject. Vásquez Espinoza said they illustrate how biodiversity supports entire social systems. Beyond pollination, stingless bees contribute to medicine, nutrition, education, and local economies while creating opportunities for women and young people through beekeeping. Working alongside Indigenous communities, she has come to see the species as a practical avenue for rainforest conservation that strengthens livelihoods at the same time.

Questions from journalists turned to recent archaeological discoveries revealing sophisticated civilizations beneath the Amazon canopy. Using LiDAR technology, researchers have identified extensive earthworks, settlements, and engineered landscapes that challenge longstanding assumptions that the rainforest was occupied primarily by small nomadic groups. Vásquez Espinoza said the discoveries demonstrate that large populations once lived in balance with the forest, developing agriculture, water management systems, and soil practices thousands of years ago.

Those findings, she argued, carry practical relevance as climate change places increasing pressure on global food systems. Ancient agricultural knowledge preserved by Indigenous communities may offer insights for future food production, just as Amazon biodiversity has already contributed to modern medicine. She pointed to anesthesia and FDA-approved pharmaceuticals derived from rainforest plants as examples of discoveries whose origins trace back to the Amazon.

Several questions focused on why people living far from South America should care about the rainforest. Vásquez Espinoza described the Amazon as a global system whose influence extends well beyond its borders. Water released by billions of trees helps shape rainfall patterns, storm systems, and ocean conditions across continents. Coffee, cacao, timber, gold, and medicinal compounds entering international markets also depend on healthy rainforest ecosystems, making the Amazon part of everyday life even for those who never visit it.

The briefing also explored the relationship between traditional knowledge and scientific research. Vásquez Espinoza rejected the idea that Indigenous knowledge lacks scientific rigor, arguing instead that it reflects generations of careful observation, experimentation, and refinement. She remarked that "modern science is catching up with ancestral knowledge," suggesting that researchers are increasingly validating understandings Indigenous communities have maintained for centuries.

Political uncertainty in South America surfaced repeatedly throughout the discussion. Asked about shifting governments and weakening environmental protections, Vásquez Espinoza acknowledged growing concern among scientists but emphasized that meaningful conservation frequently begins locally. Community-led restoration, habitat protection, and sustainable land management continue regardless of political transitions, she said, and those efforts collectively shape broader environmental outcomes.

As the conversation concluded, Vásquez Espinoza returned to the idea that solutions to global environmental problems often begin close to home. Reconnecting with nature, she suggested, does not require traveling into the Amazon. It can begin with paying attention to the landscape immediately outside one's door. Her closing reflection framed the larger challenge facing conservation and science alike: whether societies are willing to recognize that some of the knowledge needed for the future has been present all along.
