Deb Haaland is running for Governor of New Mexico.  As the leading Democratic candidate in the primary season, she is likely to win her party’s nomination and then win the governorship in the largely Democratic state.

If she wins, Haaland willl be the first Native American elected to the governorship of a US state.

Haaland is most recently known for serving as Secretary of the Department of the Interior in the Biden administration from 2021-2025. Before that she served in Congress, representing New Mexico’s District 1 from 2018 to 2020.

As an enrolled Laguna Pueblo, she was the first Indigenous person to head the federal agency, the Department of the Interior, that facilitates Indigenous people through the bureau it supervises, the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
