New York Governor Kathy Hochul vetoed a bill that would have returned state recognition to the Montaukett Nation on Long Island. The Montaukett people once had recognition by the state, but were declared to be “extinct” by a judge in 1910, even with 75 tribal members sitting in the courtroom.
The state legislature has passed Montaukett recognition eight times in the past few years and it has been vetoed each time.
There are at least two Indian tribes on Long Island. The Unkechaug, which has state recognition; and the Shinnecock, who have federal recognition.
