Assemblymember Darshana Patel Secures $5 Million to Improve San Marcos Parks

March 8, 2026

SAN MARCOS — Assemblymember Dr. Darshana Patel (AD-76) has secured $5 million from the state budget to fund long-needed improvements at six San Marcos parks, delivering upgrades that will also generate significant ongoing savings for the city and taxpayers.

San Marcos parks serve as everyday community infrastructure—places where families gather, neighbors connect, and residents of all ages find space to be active and unwind. As one of the fastest-growing cities in San Diego County, San Marcos has more residents depending on this crucial infrastructure every year. Access to quality green spaces encourages physical activity, strengthens community ties, and provides shade and cooling that benefits entire neighborhoods during hot summers.

The $5 million investment addresses infrastructure needs across the parks while building in efficiencies that reduce future costs. New energy-efficient lighting is projected to save taxpayers more than $1 million over five years. An irrigation well at the city's largest park will reduce water consumption by approximately 7 million gallons of drinking water annually, saving an additional $100,000 per year.

“These funds will strengthen the parks and community spaces where families gather, kids learn life skills, and neighbors become a true community,” said Assemblymember Patel. “This is how government can and should work—targeted, practical investments that foster connection and make a tangible difference.”

“This grant funding helps the City of San Marcos invest in park improvements that will benefit our community for years to come,” said City of San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones. “We appreciate Assembly Member Patel for making this important work possible.”
