Diania Caudell is a leading interactive basket weaver of theSan Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians and Luiseño culture, the first peoples of Oceanside.
“I enjoy sharing the history of my people and the art of basketry to both young and old. The Luiseño people are still living and breathing here in San Diego and Riverside counties, and our history is important to share,” she says. “I’ve always been proud of my heritage and my family connection to the area.”
Caudell, is a retired accountant and an elder member of the San Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians (her brother, Mel Vernon, is captain of the San Luis Rey Band). She lives in Escondido and has two children and two granddaughters, as well as many cousins.
