In honor of May 2024 being Foster Care Month, Attorney Shane Harris of the People’s Association of Justice Advocates (PAJA) secured the California Assembly Bill 2906 with the support of County Supervisor Jim Desmond. The bill is designed to secure foster child benefits and financial rights. The bill supports self-sufficiency and the right to utilize funding to support their life.
“I am pleased that, this week, San Diego County Supervisors passed my proposed measure for the county to become a sponsor of AB2906. I have signed off on the new county policy my office proposed. Foster children deserve their social security and disability benefits, not the counties who already receive federal and state monies for them. AB2906 is a game changer, and the state legislature and governor need to pass and sign this,” Harris said.
Attorney Harris, a former foster child himself, along with others, have clear proposals to promote normalcy for foster children to protect rights like housing, education, job training and family reunification. Harris is also working with para-programs like Parent Share, founded by former foster child Caitlin Radigan, whose organization helps with childcare and lactation for foster families.
These are programs that are imperative for the protection of God’s people. The community has the right to champion for foster rights with Harris. Attorney Harris is in good company with the support of heiress and philanthropist Cheryl Morrow, community leader Brian Goodin, the Grandparents Network, Cheryl Lambert and me.
