NAACP CA/HI State Convention in Los Angeles
On October 25, the NAACP met in Los Angeles to discuss some important topics affecting our future. The speakers included Regina Wilson, the executive director of California Black Media, and the NAACP Board of Directors chairman Leon W. Russell, who were quick to address issues regarding Project 2025 and how it can affect our community. Project 2025 wants to “return the government to the people.” The conference also hosted a lunch. Congresswoman Maxine Waters spoke eloquently during the lunch about humanitarian issues during a fireside chat with NAACP president and CEO Derrick Johnson and NAACP CA/HI president Rick L. Callender who addressed key issues facing the communities.
The weekend wrapped up with Mike Davis, president pro tempore of the Los Angeles Board of Public Works, receiving the NAACP California-Hawaii Advocacy Award for his work in speaking up “on the behalf of or in support of an issue, person, or injustice.” Mike Davis has “advocated to ensure equitable treatment and opportunities when it comes to voting rights, education, economic empowerment, criminal justice, and health, including environmental justice.”
