The Urban Indian Heritage Society demonstrates that the OMB (Office of Management and Budget) has granted the wishes of the Urban Indian, by expanding the Census definition of American Indian/Alaska Native (AIAN).
- The phrase “who maintains tribal affiliation or community attachment” was removed from the American Indian or Alaska Native (AIAN) definition.
- The term “Negro” was removed from the Black or African American definition.
These changes remove two obstacles to many American Indians, misclassified or unenrolled, form claiming their identity as American Indians. For more details see:
