Storm Season Safety-Getting Ahead of Extreme Winter Weather.
We were invited to participate in the EMS briefing on December 7, 2023.
There were four main speakers that were able to discuss different aspects of storm safety in California, Diana, Bianca, Jazmin and Alf. They provide information on resources, insurance, and community-based organizations to help Californians prepare for extreme weather events.
They discussed storm season safety in California, highlighting challenges posed by extreme weather including floods, power outages, and more. Experts predict a strong El Nino event in 2024.
El Nino is characterized by warmer-than-average waters in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, which can lead to changes in the jet stream and influence weather patterns globally. The text also discusses the predictability of El Nino events and mentions that there is currently an El Nino advisory in effect, with a 35% chance of a historically strong El Nino event this winter.

Jazmin then discussed insurance coverage for weather-related damage, highlighting that standard homeowners' policies typically do not cover flood, mudslides, or debris flow. Flood damage coverage can be obtained through the National Flood Insurance Program. The basic liability policy required by law in California does not cover flooding, and comprehensive policies are needed for coverage against storm damage, wind, and flooding.
