Doug Burgum was North Dakota Governor during the Dakota Access Pipeline protests in 2016. Now he is President Trump's pick to head the Department of the Interior, and indirectly, the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

However, many Tribal leaders are optimistic about the pro-energy development nominee due to his good relationships with Tribal leaders in North Dakota during his two terms as governor.
